LIG Nex1 Builds CIWS-II Mass Production Facility

· LIG Nex1 completes system assembly building, near-field measurement facility and radar system test facility optimized for CIWS-II development and mass production
LIG Nex1 held a building completion ceremony for the CIWS-II system assembly building, the near-field measurement facility, and the third radar system test facility on June 26 at Gumi House in Gumi, Gyeongbuk.
LIG Nex1 CEO Shin Ick-hyun, as well as representatives from the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, Agency for Defense Development, Defense Agency for Technology and Quality, suppliers, and Gumi City, celebrated the completion of the dedicated facilities and pledged the successful completion of the development task.
Completed with a total investment of KRW 21 billion, the CIWS-II system assembly building and test grounds are equipped with facilities optimized for the development and mass production of the CIWS-II. These include system assembly, system integration and interlocking simulations, and performance verification.
CIWS (Close-In Weapon System) serves as a ship's last line of defense, intercepting incoming ship-to-ship missiles at close range if the primary air defense system fails.
LIG Nex1 plans to complete the development of CIWS-Ⅱ by 2027. This advanced system will feature an AESA radar providing 360-degree all-round detection, an Electro Optical Tracking System, and a 30mm Gatling gun to improve range, reaction speed, and firepower.
In particular, the CIWS-II will evolve to effectively counter swarming drones by incorporating AHEAD ammunition. It will also be capable of defending critical facilities and bases, such as power plants and airports, from Surface-to-Surface Cruise Missile and Multiple Rocket Launcher threats.
“Building on the CIWS-II mass production facility, we are committed to successful R&D and mass production, as well as pursue evolutionary development for ground use and overseas export,” said CEO Shin Ick-hyun.
